We arrived in St.
Louis around 3 pm after travelling 357 miles.
Parking the van on the street in downtown St. Louis was easy and we
spent the next two hours touring the “Old Court House”, where slave Dred Scott
filed a lawsuit against his owner, and the riverfront area under the arch. Got some great pictures of the river, a
barge, the riverboat “Tom Sawyer” which my high school class rented for our
graduation party, and the Cargil/Continental Grain Elevator across the river in East
St. Louis. My dad worked for Continental Grain and I spent many Saturday visiting that elevator.
Leaving downtown we headed for “The Hill” and Charlie Gitto’s
restaurant. Joni and I shared toasted
ravioli, which this restaurant claims to have invented, and for our main
courses Joni had cannelloni, in honor of my grandmother, and I had “Veal Nunzio”. We loved our dishes; my veal was the best I’d
ever eaten.
From Gitto’s we head to Ted Drewes’ for a couple of
custards, and then to our campground in Babler State Park.
